Your mom always told you not to play with your food.
But caterers today are having more fun than ever with their food! While sit down dinners or buffets are still seen at many parties, some hosts are looking for new and different ways to add a “wow factor” to their event. We always hear that you eat with your eyes as well as your mouth, so why not have some stunning and innovative food displays to tempt your guests!
For some ideas on taking your party food to the next level, we went to the best (seriously...they were awarded the 2016 International Caterer of the Year Award by International Caterers Association!). Our wonderful friend Melissan Falcone, Director of Sales at Santa Barbara Catering, had some awesome tips and trends to share with us!
An adventure for your tastebuds
Surprise your guests with flavors they would not typically expect. It’s fun for guests to try new things! For instance, we’ve all had macaroons for dessert, but how about savory macaroons like tomato and basil or rosemary with goat cheese as an appetizer?
Think of your food as art
Your guests want food that is not only delicious but is beautiful to look at. Salad is sort of boring on a plate, but layer it in a jar and hang it on the wall and everyone will want one! I mean who can resist a personal sized pie in a jar or donuts rolling by on a cart? No one!
Serve it up
The way things are served is just as important as the food itself. Mobile cuisine stations are huge right now! Food served from rolling carts or large passing trays allow your guests to mingle while the dishes come to them. Chef attended stations are a great way to entertain guests while serving them. These stations allow guests to see just how their food is made and even to customize their dishes on occasion.
Fire and smoke
Who doesn’t love a little theatrics with their meal?! Flaming donuts, smoking cocktails, and customizable ice cream frozen right in front of you will definitely entertain your guests!
Thanks to Melissan and Santa Barbara Catering for these great ideas and photos!
