Wedding Planning vs. Wedding Coordination

Planning your wedding is a big task!
When you think about all the things that need to be done, you can get overwhelmed. You know you need help with this momentous event, but exactly what kind of help do you need?

There are two main services to consider when hiring a professional to help with your wedding: Wedding Planning and Wedding Coordination. These terms are often used interchangeably and go by many different names so it is important to know what you need.

Wedding Planning (aka Full Planning or Design)

What a planner does
This person will help you with everything including researching venues, creating a detailed budget, hiring vendors, envisioning a design concept, and overseeing all details on your day. They will be with you through the entire planning process, managing every detail to bring your wedding day vision to life.

When a planner gets involved
It is best to hire a planner before you do anything, even before booking your venue (because they can help with that)!

Who a planner can help
A couple that doesn’t have the time or desire to be involved in every single detail of the day, a couple that doesn’t know where to start and values the advice of a professional, or a couple that has a vision for what they want but needs help pulling all the pieces together.

Wedding Coordination (aka. Day Of Planning/Coordination)

What a coordinator does
This person will help bring together the plans that you have already made to ensure that everything runs smoothly on the big day. They will make sure all the vendors you hired are informed of plans, help with any last minute details, create a comprehensive timeline, and manage the execution of all events on the wedding day.

When a coordinator gets involved
Coordinators should start assisting you with pulling together plans thirty to sixty days prior to your wedding. However, don’t wait until then to hire someone! Hiring a coordinator early will secure your date with them and can often offer benefits like vendor referrals or other services that are helpful early on in planning.

Who a coordinator can help
A couple that loves the planning part of the wedding but is not so great at the organizing part, a couple that is feeling overwhelmed as the wedding gets closer, and most of all, a couple that wants to enjoy their wedding day to the fullest and doesn’t want any of their friends or family to miss out on the festivities because they are busy taking on the role of the coordinator.
